Advantages:

• Removing of impurities by internal backwashing
• Operating flow rates between 0 - 100% possible

Disadvantages:

• Backwashing before regeneration is absolutely necessary
• High chemical consumption for a good regenerated polishing layer
• Low efficiency of the vessel volume ( 100 % freeboard )
• High regeneration time and rinse water consumption
